About Linda May, MD

Dr Linda May founder of Sacred Mission Hospice

As the medical director of Sacred Mission, Dr. Linda May is the guiding light and force behind changing public perception and best practices in hospice care services. In her role, Dr. May is the primary physician that approves patients for hospice admission, oversees their plan of care and manages the hospice care team. Fellowship trained in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and Geriatric Medicine, Dr. May holds specialty training to care for patients across a breadth of terminal diagnoses from Alzheimer’s and age-related dementia to cancer and pulmonary diseases.

While already on a trajectory to attend medical school, hospice touched her life as an undergraduate student at the University of Texas. Her uncle, a father figure in her life, was diagnosed with stomach cancer, a notoriously aggressive cancer. Seeing the failure of his care and pain management through his last few months of life, Linda felt a deep calling to make a difference in her career and cemented her decision to specialize in palliative and hospice care.

“I became frustrated with both the care provided by other hospices and arguing with non-clinical administrators about the cost of medications my patients needed,” said Dr. May when asked why she decided to leave corporate hospice care. “Hospice care should be a patient-first mentality.”

When patients are admitted to Sacred Mission, her goal is to make sure patients and their families feel heard, feel truly cared for and know that they are not just a number.

At Sacred Mission, Dr. May is reshaping the way hospice works. In an industry often plagued with medically underqualified hospice management, unethical admission practices, and profit-driven decision-making, Dr. May is committed and motivated to leading the change.

“I got tired of admitting people who weren’t ready for hospice or being unable to use the right medication because it was too expensive, “ said Dr. May when asked why she decided to leave corporate healthcare. “Hospice care should be a patient-first mentality, not ambulance chasing or a money grab, using questionable business practices.”

When patients are admitted to Sacred Mission, her goal is to make sure patients and their families feel heard, feel truly cared for and know that they are not just a number.
